I'm looking for a device that may not exist, i've been looking for days and
cant find it.

what i need is something pocket sized, with a qwerty keyboard, that will
run linux and let me put my own software on it

the open pandora project is the closest i've come to finding my dream pda
but it will probably be a year or more before they go on sale. Does anyone
know of any hardware that fits my needs? Thanks MUCH if anyone has any info

Nokia N810 ?
From looking at pics of it on the net it appears it does not have a qwerty.
Does it have one that folds out?

I'm sorry I didn't do my due diligence, it turns out it does. in fact it
looks pretty awesome. does anyone have any experience coding for these
machines? I'll need to write an app that can access the net, and basic
multimedia functions. thanks again

I have to agree with a second-hand Zaurus. Has a plethora of apps available
for it & very easy to develop for using the Qt library (which is also used
for KDE). In most cases, you can simply recompile Qt apps and have them run
unmodified on other supported OSes (ie, other flavors of Linux & Windows).

My SL-5500 remains my primary gadget seven-and-a-half years after I bought
it.

Hi there,
I homed in on this thread since I have a refurbed SL-5500 and am
determined to learn to use it. I'm not so interested in the PIM portion
but would rather have access to database, graphics and sreadsheet type
functions. A mini-GIS would be ideal. One thing I've noticed is that
nearly all sources for software are now shut down, page not listed, 404
errors etc. Has anybody stored the contents of the old myzaurus website
or similar. I have found several lists of software-- but a good 80% are
dead links.

And the short term question: I'm having trouble getting it to sync via
usb with a Win7 64bit PC. There must be a way.

For the GIS app, check here:

Zaurus Software Index is a good source for community software:
http://killefiz.de/zaurus/

If you do a bit more searching, you should be able to find copies of the
Sharp ROMs, software, etc. archived online, even though the myzaurus site is
long gone.

Doubtful you'll get it to work with the Sharp ROM. Sharp abandoned the
Zaurus long before even Vista was available. Even the PalmOS4 PDAs of the
same era won't work with Vista or newer versions of Windows.

Take a look at some of the alternate ROMs, such as Cacko, pdaXrom or
OpenZaurus to see if any of those folks support 64-bit Win7.

Regards,

Thanks for the response and leads. I'll check them out. Is there
another newsgroup that pays attention to zaurus tech?

I recall OZ got relaced by Anstrom; ie

http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/hardware/zaurus

but I'm not sure it'll support a SL5500, but it does do the 5600

You're right. Nothing for the Collie. There is a lot of odd software
out there though and a very interesting GIS. Its truly hard to imagine
running Grass on a 2x3 screen!

Looks like I'll have to run it as an independent machine.

Just looked at the page again; further down it says:

%%% These machines are not supported: tosa (6000), collie (5500), akita (1000).
%%% We will continue to produce images for the unsupported machines but
%%% fixes to them are likely to be slow in being worked on without active
%%% developer working on them.

So you can get something to run, but no active support. I keep meaning
to try one on my 5500 ...
